Quick answer

Calculate net wall area by subtracting openings from each section. Multiply it by bricks per m² for one leaf and the number of similar leaves, add waste once, then round up units and packs. For costs, use purchased bricks, your quoted prices and whole-job allowances. Labour is charged on the completed wall area once.

How it works

Use this free brick wall calculator for South Africa to estimate single or double-skin wall quantities and a budget from your own quotes. Add wall sections, subtract openings and choose actual brick dimensions or supplier coverage. Compare stock, maxi or cement bricks, then download your calculated result as a CSV that opens in Excel.

Formula

Wall budget = purchased units × quoted unit price + net wall area × completed-wall labour rate + entered allowances, then any additional VAT and contingency.

Assumptions and common mistakes

Check units, input values and the method before relying on an estimate. Review the existing tool notes and official sources below.

Formula

Wall budget = purchased units × quoted unit price + net wall area × completed-wall labour rate + entered allowances, then any additional VAT and contingency.

StepCalculation
Net elevation areaSection count × length × height − total openings
Required unitsNet m² × one-leaf units/m² × similar leaves × (1 + waste/100), rounded up
Purchased unitsRequired units rounded to full packs when entered
Quoted budgetPurchased units × unit price + net m² × completed-wall labour + allowances
Tax and contingencyAdd VAT only on the selected quote basis, then apply contingency

How to use the brick wall calculator

Enter each wall section once, using length, height and the number of identical sections. Enter the total opening area across that section, not the opening size for just one repeated wall. Choose one leaf for single-skin quantities or two similar leaves for a double-skin quantity approximation. For dissimilar leaves, calculate each product separately.

Single brick wall calculator: count one leaf

Here, single means one masonry leaf or skin. It does not mean a universal wall thickness or a structural recommendation. Use actual face length and laid height with the intended mortar joint, or the supplier’s installed units per m². Brick width runs through the wall and is not the visible height.

Double brick wall and double-skin quantities

Two similar leaves need twice the unrounded one-leaf quantity before waste and pack rounding. Measure one elevation area, not both visible faces, then choose two leaves. For walls with different inner and outer products, separate calculations are needed. Bonds, returns, piers, corners, ties and cavity details require a project take-off; this tool does not approve a wall design.

Maxi and cement brick wall calculator inputs

Select a matching size example only when it describes your actual product, or choose custom dimensions. Maxi and cement brick names do not establish one universal unit size or coverage. Cement bricks and hollow concrete blocks are also different products. Use supplier units per m² for the exact unit and one-leaf laying arrangement where available.

How much to build a brick wall calculator: enter quotes

Material cost equals purchased units multiplied by the quoted unit price. Labour equals net elevation area multiplied by your quote per m² of the completed wall. Whole-job mortar, foundation, finish, delivery and other allowances are then added. A zero allowance means that cost has not been priced. It does not mean the work is unnecessary.

Worked quantity and cost example

A 10 m × 2.4 m section with 3 m² of openings gives 21 m² net. One leaf of example 222 × 73 mm faces with 10 mm joints and 10% waste requires 1,200 bricks, without pack rounding. At hypothetical R3 per brick, R200/m² completed-wall labour and R2,000 other allowances, subtotal is R9,800. These are arithmetic examples, not market rates.

VAT, contingency and double-skin labour

Use a consistent quote basis. Add your entered VAT percentage only when all entered amounts exclude it. If quotes already include VAT, add none. Contingency applies after any added VAT. The labour rate must cover the complete selected arrangement; choosing two leaves does not double a single-leaf labour quote automatically.

Brick wall calculator download for Excel

After calculating, select Download result CSV (Excel). The file contains the current wall sections, coverage assumptions, quantity breakdown and entered budget. Excel can open the CSV; if needed, import it with a comma delimiter. It is a snapshot of the result, not an Excel formula workbook. To change the estimate, edit the online calculator and download again.

Before ordering or accepting a quote

Confirm site measurements, brick specification, foundations, wall stability, openings, reinforcement, lintels, finishes, access and delivery with the contractor or responsible designer. The tool estimates entered quantities and prices only. It does not determine suitable wall thickness, foundation depth, structural compliance or current national building rates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate bricks for a single-skin wall?

Measure net elevation area, choose one leaf, apply the exact product’s units per m² and add your waste allowance. The tool rounds the requirement and any purchasing packs up.

How do I use a double brick wall calculator?

Choose two leaves for two similar products and enter the elevation area once. If the inner and outer leaves use different products or rates, calculate each separately.

How much does it cost to build a brick wall in South Africa?

It depends on the design, site and current quotes. Enter brick prices, completed-wall labour and all relevant allowances to calculate your own budget; this tool does not provide live market rates.

Can I calculate a maxi or cement brick wall?

Yes. Use the actual laid face dimensions and joint or the supplier’s installed coverage for one leaf. The product name alone does not determine units per m².

Can I download the brick wall calculator for Excel?

You can download the calculated result as an Excel-compatible CSV. It is a result snapshot, not a native Excel workbook with formulas or an offline calculator.

Does double skin double the labour cost?

The labour input is your quote per m² of the completed wall. Enter a quote for the selected single or double-skin arrangement; the tool applies it to net elevation area once.
