Calculate your result
Quick answer
For a 10 m × 2.4 m wall with 3 m² of openings, the net area is 21 m². A 222 mm × 73 mm brick face with 10 mm joints needs about 51.932 bricks/m². One leaf with 10% waste requires 1,200 bricks before any pack rounding.
How it works
Use this brick calculator for South Africa to estimate stock or face bricks from wall sizes, openings, mortar joints and waste. Add unequal wall sections and check the purchasing breakdown before ordering.
Formula
Quantity = net wall area × units per m² × masonry leaves × (1 + waste ÷ 100). Round up once, then round up to full packs if requested.
Assumptions and common mistakes
Check units, input values and the method before relying on an estimate. Review the existing tool notes and official sources below.
Formula
Quantity = net wall area × units per m² × masonry leaves × (1 + waste ÷ 100). Round up once, then round up to full packs if requested.
How to use the brick calculator
Add each different wall as a separate section. Use the identical-wall count only when its dimensions match. Opening area is the total across all walls in that section. Select one or two masonry leaves, choose a product example and check its face dimensions. Choose supplier coverage instead if your quotation gives units per square metre. Enter waste and any full-pack quantity, then calculate.
How many bricks do I need?
Multiply net wall area by the coverage for one masonry leaf and by the number of leaves. Apply the waste percentage to that unrounded quantity. The tool then rounds upward to whole bricks. A pack size can increase the purchase beyond that requirement. The example above needs six packs of 200 bricks, or 1,200 supplied bricks.
Face brick calculator: count the leaf being built
Face bricks can use the same geometry as stock bricks when their installed dimensions match. Select the face-brick example and replace it if your product differs. Count a separate backing leaf separately when it uses different units. A face-brick order does not automatically include stock bricks behind it, special shapes, sills or matching corner units.
Brick calculator per m²
Units per square metre = 1,000,000 ÷ [(face length + vertical joint) × (face height + bed joint)], with every dimension in millimetres. The form assumes equal bed and vertical joints. A different bond, unequal joints or special shapes may need a supplier take-off rather than this simplified repeating module.
Can I use a brick calculator app?
This calculator works in a phone or desktop browser without an app download or visitor registration. Calculate after changing inputs. Copy result or Print keeps the displayed estimate. A shared page link does not contain your measurements.
Before placing an order
Check the product label, installation orientation, mortar gauge, openings, corners and waste with the supplier or installer. This estimates quantities, not stability, reinforcement, foundation dimensions or compliance.
Brick and block coverage comparison
| One leaf, no waste | Face L × H (mm) | Joint (mm) | Units per m² |

| Stock/face example | 222 × 73 | 10 | 51.932 |
| Same face, larger joint | 222 × 73 | 12 | 50.277 |

Use net wall area × units per m² × number of masonry leaves, then apply waste and round up. Use the selected product’s installed face size or supplier coverage.
Can I calculate face bricks here?
Yes. Select the face-brick example and confirm its actual face length and height. Count a different backing leaf separately.
What does a brick calculator need for accuracy?
Measured wall sections, total openings, the actual product face size or supplier coverage, joint thickness, number of leaves, waste and pack quantity.
Is this an official retailer calculator?
No. 99tools is an independent planning tool. Enter the actual specification from your chosen retailer or manufacturer.
