Quick answer

For 20 m² net area, an entered 10% allowance gives a 22 m² target. If the selected box covers 2.2 m², the estimate is 10 whole boxes. Box coverage varies by product; underlay requirements and allowances must be checked separately.

How it works

Measure your rooms, enter the selected laminate’s actual box coverage and choose an estimating allowance. Calculate whole boxes, optional separate underlay rolls and a budget based on your current quotes.

Formula

Net m² = sum of measured areas minus valid deductions. Flooring target = net m² × (1 + allowance/100). Boxes = ceil(target ÷ box coverage). Underlay rolls use their own net-area allowance and usable roll coverage.

Assumptions and common mistakes

Check units, input values and the method before relying on an estimate. Review the existing tool notes and official sources below.

Material quantity formula

Net m² = sum of measured areas minus valid deductions. Flooring target = net m² × (1 + allowance/100). Boxes = ceil(target ÷ box coverage). Underlay rolls use their own net-area allowance and usable roll coverage.

How much laminate flooring do I need?

Measure the area that will actually receive the selected flooring. Add separate, non-overlapping rectangles for an L-shaped space, or enter a measured area for each room. Subtract only areas that genuinely remain uncovered under the specified installation plan. Do not subtract loose furniture. Permanent cabinets and fixed units need the product’s installation requirements checked rather than a blanket deduction rule. The calculator rejects deductions larger than a room and requires a positive combined net area.

Laminate flooring calculator in metres and square feet

Choose metres for room dimensions and m² for direct areas and deductions, or feet for dimensions and ft² for those areas. The unit selection applies to every room line; values are not automatically converted when you change it. Product pack coverage remains m², and plank cover dimensions remain mm. The tool converts ft² to m² using 0.09290304. One m² is about 10.7639 ft². Avoid combining the length of one room with the width of another.

How many boxes of laminate flooring do I need?

Net area × (1 + entered allowance/100) gives the target flooring area. Divide by the actual coverage per box and round up to whole boxes. Use the selected product’s label; boxes do not all contain the same number or size of planks. Alternatively, enter confirmed effective plank cover dimensions and the number of planks per box to calculate coverage. Nominal dimensions that include locking edges should not be treated as installed cover without confirmation. Do not combine different products into one coverage figure.

Cutting allowance and leftover flooring

The flooring allowance is an explicit estimating input, not a universal recommendation. Direction, narrow rooms, doorways, pattern, cuts and whether offcuts can be reused affect the required amount. The example starts at an editable 10%; it is not a guarantee for straight, diagonal or herringbone work. Extra supplied area includes both the chosen allowance and the rounding to full boxes. It does not all represent reusable spare boards, and this tool does not produce a plank-by-plank layout.

Underlay for laminate flooring

Choose separate underlay rolls only when the product and subfloor specification require that purchase. Enter the actual usable roll coverage and a separate allowance for the underlay layout. The roll estimate uses net floor area with that underlay allowance, not the area of unopened spare laminate boxes. A product with attached backing may have different requirements; adding another layer without approval can be unsuitable. Moisture-control membranes, sealed joints and edge details are separate specification questions and are not automatically supplied by an acoustic underlay.

Worked packs and underlay example

A 5 m by 4 m room has 20 m² net area if there are no deductions. An entered 10% flooring allowance gives 22 m². With a confirmed 2.2 m² per box, buy 10 boxes supplying 22 m². If the plan requires separate underlay, a hypothetical usable roll coverage of 10 m² with a separate 5% allowance gives 21 m² required and three whole rolls. These coverage figures and allowances are examples, not a standard box size, roll size or product recommendation.

Laminate flooring prices and installation cost

Enter the current flooring quote per box or per supplied m²; both price bases use whole-box purchased quantities. Optional underlay prices use whole rolls or their supplied m². Installation per m² uses net floor area, with preparation, removal, trims and delivery entered as separate quoted totals. Zero lines remain unpriced and no extra VAT is added. A partial entered budget is not a complete installed quote. Check minimum charges, stairs and unusual layouts separately with the installer.

Comparing South African specials and suppliers

Whether you compare CTM, Cashbuild, Build It or another supplier, record the exact product, box coverage, stock availability, delivery area and quote date. Sale and special prices can change. A box price is not directly comparable with a per-m² price until coverage is known. For laminate flooring in Cape Town, Durban or another area, obtain a local delivered and installed quote on the same scope. This independent calculator does not provide live branch prices, nearby stock or supplier availability.

What is laminate flooring, and is it the same as vinyl?

Laminate commonly uses a wood-fibre core with a decorative image and a protective surface. A wood-look finish does not make it solid timber or engineered wood flooring. Vinyl and rigid-core vinyl are different product families, so the phrase vinyl laminate flooring can be ambiguous. Compare the actual construction, intended room use, installation system, comfort and maintenance requirements. Neither material is universally better; compare the specific products and the conditions in which they will be installed.

Waterproof and water-resistant laminate flooring

Treat these terms as product-specific claims with installation, exposure and warranty conditions. Surface-water resistance does not prove that every joint, perimeter, subfloor or room application is protected from moisture. Check permitted wet-area use, required finishing and the limits for standing water or leaks. Do not assume that a moisture-resistant surface removes the need to assess concrete moisture or select a suitable underlay and membrane. The calculator does not approve a product for a bathroom, laundry or exterior use.

How to install laminate flooring on concrete or tiles

Start with the exact floor’s current instructions and inspect the substrate. It must meet that product’s requirements for condition, flatness, dryness and stability. Existing tiles may be suitable for some systems only after checking soundness, irregularities, moisture, finished height and the required preparation. Concrete needs the specified moisture assessment and moisture-control arrangement. Underlay does not automatically correct an unsuitable substrate. Follow the selected system for acclimatisation, expansion provisions, joints, doorway transitions and underfloor heating; there is no universal gap or waiting period supplied here.

Common laying mistakes and cleaning care

Quantity mistakes include ordering from gross room area without checking deductions, assuming every box covers the same area, and forgetting whole-pack rounding. Installation mistakes can include unapproved extra underlay, inadequate substrate preparation or restricting a floating floor’s movement. Check the product’s approved cutting and locking procedures before work. For cleaning, remove grit with a suitable soft tool, clean up spills promptly and use the approved cleaner and moisture level. Avoid flooding; do not use steam, abrasives or polish unless the specific product instructions permit them.

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes of laminate flooring do I need?

Multiply net area by one plus your allowance percentage, divide by the selected box coverage and round up. Use the actual product label.

How much flooring is in one box?

It varies by product. Enter the printed m² coverage, or confirmed effective plank cover dimensions and planks per box.

Can I calculate more than one room?

Yes. Add non-overlapping room or area lines. The result pools the same flooring product across those lines before rounding to boxes.

Does this work in square feet?

Yes. Room measurements and deductions can use feet and ft². Product pack coverage stays in m², and the result shows both m² and ft².

How much underlay do I need?

If separate rolls are required, the tool uses net area plus a separately entered underlay allowance and rounds to whole rolls.

Is 10% waste always enough?

No. It is an editable example allowance, not a layout guarantee. Confirm the allowance for the pattern, cuts and installation plan.

Can I install laminate over tiles?

Some products permit it on a suitable prepared substrate. Check soundness, flatness, moisture, height and the exact installation instructions first.

Is all laminate flooring waterproof?

No. Check the specific product’s claim, permitted use, finishing details and warranty limits.

How do I clean laminate flooring?

Remove grit gently, deal with spills promptly and follow the specific product’s cleaner and moisture instructions. Avoid unapproved steam or abrasive methods.

Does the calculator show current supplier prices?

No. Costs use your entered quotes and purchasing quantities. Zero cost lines stay unpriced.
