Calculate your result
Quick answer
First calculate the wet volume required for the job. Apply one allowance and your agreed dry-material factor, then split the volume using the specified cement:sand ratio. Convert cement bulk volume to mass and round up full bags. The mix, factor and density are inputs, not universal specifications or guarantees of strength.
How it works
Use this Sand and Cement Calculator for South Africa to estimate separate cement bags and sand bulk volume for a specified site mix. Start with area and thickness, known wet volume, or brick count and a confirmed mortar yield. Enter the cement:sand ratio, conversion assumptions and any current material quotes.
Formula
Wet volume = area × thickness/1000, entered wet m³, or brick count × litres per 1000/1000000. Adjusted dry volume = wet m³ × (1 + allowance/100) × dry factor. Split by cement:sand parts; cement bags = cement m³ × bulk density ÷ bag kg, rounded up.
Assumptions and common mistakes
Check units, input values and the method before relying on an estimate. Review the existing tool notes and official sources below.
Formula
Wet volume = area × thickness/1000, entered wet m³, or brick count × litres per 1000/1000000. Adjusted dry volume = wet m³ × (1 + allowance/100) × dry factor. Split by cement:sand parts; cement bags = cement m³ × bulk density ÷ bag kg, rounded up.
| Step | Formula |
|---|---|
| Wet volume | Area × thickness/1000 OR known m³ OR bricks × litres per 1000/1000000 |
| Dry materials | Wet m³ × (1 + allowance/100) × entered dry factor |
| Cement volume | Dry m³ × cement parts ÷ total parts |
| Sand volume | Dry m³ × sand parts ÷ total parts |
| Cement bags | Cement m³ × entered bulk density ÷ bag kg, rounded up |
How to use the Sand and Cement Calculator
Use area × thickness for a plaster coat, screed or other continuous bed. Enter net surface area once, including both faces only if both actually need treatment. Use known wet volume when a take-off already supplies it. For brickwork by count, obtain a wet mortar rate in litres per 1,000 actual bricks. Do not use wall thickness as a solid mortar bed through the entire brick wall.
Cement:sand ratio means cement first
A ratio such as the editable 1:4 example means one measured part cement to four measured parts sand by volume. It does not mean one cement bag to four wheelbarrows. Bag mass and container volume are different units. Confirm the required mix and how it is batched before entering a ratio.
Dry factor and cement density are assumptions
The initial factor of 1.33 and loose cement bulk density of 1,440 kg/m³ are example estimating inputs. They are not laboratory measurements or universal yield factors. Replace them with agreed values for the material and job. Sand moisture, grading, bulking, compaction and losses affect actual yield and delivery quantities.
Worked area and thickness example
For 10 m² at an example 15 mm thickness, wet volume is 0.15 m³. With 10% allowance and a factor of 1.33, adjusted dry volume is 0.21945 m³. At a hypothetical cement:sand ratio of 1:4 and density of 1,440 kg/m³, cement is 63.2016 kg, so buy two 50 kg bags. Sand bulk volume is 0.17556 m³. These are arithmetic assumptions, not a plaster or screed specification.
Sand and cement for 1,000 bricks
Choose brick count and enter a confirmed wet mortar yield per 1,000 bricks. The rate depends on unit dimensions, joint thickness, frogs, perforations, bedding and workmanship. The calculator deliberately has no default yield for this mode. Use the Brick Mortar Calculator when your confirmed rate is per m² of one masonry leaf.
Plaster, screed, paving and tile work
Plaster sand, bricklaying sand and screed aggregate requirements are not interchangeable names for one specification. Follow the required system for material choice, preparation, thickness, batching, water, application and curing. Paving joints and tile fixing may require dedicated products rather than a generic sand-cement mix. Conventional concrete with stone belongs in the Concrete Calculator.
Sand and cement price estimate
Optional cement cost uses full purchased bags at your quoted bag price. Sand cost uses the calculated bulk volume at your entered price per m³ on that same volume basis. Confirm the supplier’s billing and delivery basis before using this estimate. Delivery is added once; use consistent VAT treatment. This is not a live price feed, loose delivery conversion or complete installed cost.
Ready mix and what is excluded
A complete premix contains its specified ingredients and must be estimated from its labelled yield or coverage, rather than treating its whole mass as cement. This site-mix result excludes coarse aggregate, water quantity, admixtures, labour, structural design and any materials not entered. Do not turn dry sand volume into tonnes without an appropriate measured bulk density.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use the Sand and Cement Calculator?
Enter area and thickness, a known wet volume, or a brick count with a confirmed mortar yield. Supply the specified cement:sand ratio and conversion assumptions; the calculator estimates cement bags and sand bulk volume.
How much sand and cement do I need for 1,000 bricks?
There is no universal quantity. Enter 1,000 bricks and the confirmed wet mortar litres per 1,000 for the actual units, joints and bedding, then use the specified mix.
How much sand and cement per m² of plastering?
It depends on thickness and the specified mix. One m² at 15 mm thickness has a geometric wet volume of 0.015 m³ before allowance. Convert that volume using the agreed material assumptions.
What is the sand and cement mix ratio?
The ratio describes measured parts, normally by volume when stated that way. Enter cement first and sand second here. No single ratio is suitable for every mortar, plaster, screed or paving job.
Is a mixture of sand and cement called mortar?
Sand and cement mixed with water can form cement mortar. Plaster and screed describe particular uses and specifications; conventional concrete also includes coarse aggregate.
Does this calculate ready-mixed product bags?
This method splits a site mix into cement and sand. Use the mortar or premix tool with the product’s labelled yield for complete bagged products; their entire mass is not cement.
Can I use sand and cement to grout pavers or fix tiles?
Do not assume a generic mix is suitable. Use the paving or tile system’s specified jointing or fixing product and coverage. This calculator does not establish product compatibility.
