An Applicant Score is not a level total
Nelson Mandela University uses the term Applicant Score, often shortened to AS. A result made by adding achievement levels will be on the wrong scale. Enter the actual percentages and retain the two languages, the mathematics subject and any compulsory programme subject. When more subjects are available, the remaining places are taken by the strongest eligible marks until six academic results are counted.
Before comparing a programme target
The school-quintile adjustment is conditional. Choose the eligible option only when your school classification is confirmed and the Life Orientation mark meets the stated condition. Do not infer a quintile from a school name, area or fees paid by an individual learner. The breakdown separates academic percentages from the bonus so the final AS can be checked without hiding how it was reached.
Worked example for NMU
Illustration only: the six academic marks are 67%, 59%, 67%, 67%, 66%, 75%, with Life Orientation at 83%. This form returns 401 Applicant Score. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.
How to use the NMU APS calculator
Start with one consistent set of school results for Nelson Mandela University. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.
Planning your NMU application
Use the full qualification name when making a NMU shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
