A one-point LO bonus has a specific threshold
The University of the Free State calls its total an Admission Point score, or AP. A mark of 90% reaches the eight-point band, while a mark of 80% remains in the seven-point band. Life Orientation has a separate rule: reaching 60% adds one point, and a still higher LO mark does not add more. Combining LO with the ordinary subject table would overstate the result.
Before comparing a programme target
Keep the academic total and the LO addition separate when checking the output. If your LO mark is 59%, the bonus is zero; at 60%, it is one. The bonus does not compensate for a missing compulsory subject or a required English mark. Selection programmes, mainstream courses and extended routes may have different conditions. Compare the right route before deciding that the overall number is sufficient.
Worked example for UFS
Illustration only: the six academic marks are 69%, 61%, 65%, 69%, 53%, 73%, with Life Orientation at 85%. This form returns 31 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.
How to use the UFS APS calculator
Start with one consistent set of school results for University of the Free State. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.
Planning your UFS application
Use the full qualification name when making a UFS shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
| Example subject | Mark | Value used before final conversion |
