Medicine is not an APS ranking exercise
The UKZN method uses an additional top band for marks of 90% or more, so a total made with the usual seven-point table can understate the result. English and the mathematics route belong in the counted set. If an applicant has extra subjects, the remaining spaces are filled by stronger eligible results after compulsory subjects are retained. Mathematics Paper 3 and Life Orientation are not substitutes for those academic subjects.
Before comparing a programme target
Do not use the ordinary APS total as a medicine selection ranking. UKZN applies a different approach to MBChB, including an average-based assessment, and selected programmes have further criteria. The college, programme and mathematics route must be checked together. This page calculates a transparent points estimate without pretending to reproduce a selection committee decision.
Worked example for UKZN
Illustration only: the six academic marks are 69%, 63%, 66%, 67%, 58%, 72%, with Life Orientation at 75%. This form returns 30 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.
How to use the UKZN APS calculator
Start with one consistent set of school results for University of KwaZulu-Natal. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.
Planning your UKZN application
Use the full qualification name when making a UKZN shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
| Example subject | Mark | Value used before final conversion |
