Language categories and a weighted score
UWC uses a weighted admission calculation with distinct categories for languages, the mathematics route, Life Orientation and other subjects. A single standard points table cannot stand in for that weighting. The result on this page is deliberately labelled a general estimate while the complete UWC conversion is being confirmed. It should not be compared with a UWC minimum as though both figures use the same units.
Before comparing a programme target
Use the subject table as a record of your entered percentages. Flag a compulsory academic subject before adding extra electives. The calculator retains flagged subjects and fills the remaining spaces with higher eligible marks, but this selection is a planning convention rather than a verified UWC rule. If your school qualification is not the NSC, a separate conversion may be needed.
Worked example for UWC
Illustration only: the six academic marks are 71%, 65%, 64%, 69%, 60%, 70%, with Life Orientation at 77%. This form returns 32 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.
How to use the UWC APS calculator
Start with one consistent set of school results for University of the Western Cape. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.
Planning your UWC application
Use the full qualification name when making a UWC shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
| Example subject | Mark | Value used before final conversion |
|---|---|---|
| English | 71% | 6 |
| Isixhosa | 65% | 5 |
| Maths | 64% | 5 |
| Science | 69% | 5 |
| Life Sciences | 60% | 5 |
| Geography | 70% | 6 |
| Life Orientation | 77% | 0 |
Example result: 32 points. This is an illustration, not an entry requirement.
